“Although it draws energy from observations of life, my work does not function as a simple reflection of reality. It exists on parallel planes where opposing snatches of matter and meaning are allowed to co-exist and combine to map out a kind of psychological arena, or space in which things may happen.
These imaginative constructs are realised through fracturing and re-assembling two-dimensional space, creating documents of a period of time which retain a feeling of weight, together with the perception that some kind of dialogue has taken place.
They involve painterly languages and ideas revolving around 'borrowed significance', using inanimate objects to explore ideas concerning human emotions and consciousness.
The challenge remains in establishing a painted space that can evoke a sense of depth and importance, yet retains a post-modern awareness of its own dramatic constructs; that can transport and bring to mind a sense of place, absence or narrative, yet is all too aware of its own sense of theatre.”
